The Bookroom
One of the more obscure cliques at Lowell was the Bookroom. To the teachers and most of the school student body, the bookroom was just that, the place where all the textbooks were stored. It was the room way back where nobody ever went except to get the books at the start of the semester and return them at the end of the semester.
To the few of us who spent a few mods there, it was a source of extra credit points towards graduation. Additionally Working in the bookroom had its perks. Besides earning the extra credits towards graduation, the bookroom staff got first hand peek at the new textbooks to be used in the school. We also had the opportunity to preview any class based on the textbooks. And finally, all the used textbooks that would have been destroyed could be recycled by the staff. These were the books with ripped bindings, outdated histories or were no longer part of the curriculum. Great way to learn subjects without attending the class.
The bookroom was also a place to just hang out during lunch break or free time. The person in charge was an adult who treated us like her children, and rightly so. We treated her like our mom away from home. We had "family" holiday parties. We would have potluck lunches for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Birthdays were celebrated.
