Matchmaker, Matchmaker
A few years prior to this event I joined a youth group sponsored by a family association in San
Francisco’s Chinatown. The group was created by my dad and a few of his
friends. Due to a language barrier and possibly a hint of apathy of the
members, I was actually voted into the executive board of the group. Here I met
this soon to be married woman whom I thought I had a chance with had she not
been joined to the hip with her fiancé. During my tenure as president, she was
voted as vice president and I became friends with her and her fiancé.
Nina and Michael were the ideal couple. As I watch their relationship blossom through the years I
often wondered if I would ever have the bond they seemed to have developed.
Their witty exchanges and the way they complimented each other, even during
their little arguments, was something I wouldn’t mind having for myself. I
guess it must have been evident to Nina since she approached me after one of the
dinners prior to the meeting. When she had the chance to be alone with me on
the way back to the association building, she started with the line “have I got
the girl for you”. Apparently she had a similar line for a fellow co-worker
during a special marathon run the two participated in. Nina’s co-worker and I
agreed to a meeting at Nina and Michael’s condo. Nina’s co-worker lived in a
unit in the same complex which made it easy for her to drop in.
The double date was to take place on the 24th day in May.
